Experiments to come alive at new science lab

Before the donation of the science lab, pupils at the school relied solely on theory to pass the subject.

THE science pupils at Mariannridge Secondary School were overjoyed when the school’s new science lab was opened recently.

The classroom received a complete overhaul as lab tables, sinks and other equipment were installed to allow for practical science lessons to take place. “We had no equipment before and relied solely on theory in the classroom,” said Busani Luthuli, deputy principal at the school. “With this lab, we will help get pupils interested in the subject and improve their results and in turn the pass rate. The pupils can now be more involved in the scientific process.

“The pupils are already asking questions and when they ask questions you can tell that their level of interest has increased. When we hear, we forget but when you do, you remember. A big thank you goes out to VNA Consulting for the laboratory and for helping to ensure the results of our pupils increases at the school. We really appreciate what you have done for us,” said Busani.

Yish Balaram, a civil engineer at VNA Consulting said, “As an engineering company we feel that it is our social responsibility to assist in the development of science and mathematics at school level.” He said the company sponsored the classroom upgrade which included the infrastructure, equipment as well as the stock of chemicals.

Edutrade, which provided the lab equipment and supplies, said that it will continuously monitor and evaluate the lab as well as provide training for the teachers.
