NPO celebrates World Food Day

Increasing global temperatures, sea level rise and water scarcity are some of the contributing factors.

MEMBERS from the Food for Life Children’s Project visited residents in Malvern to commemorate World Food Day on Sunday, 16 October. According to the project’s manager, Divesh Maharaj, the day is annually observed by over 150 countries world wide.

“The day was inaugurated by the United Nations in 1945 and is widely celebrated by organisations concerned with food security, community development and food sovereignty. Every year, the day takes on a different theme and this year the focus was on climate change and its impact on food and agriculture. Recent scientific research has shown that climate change is adversely affecting food production throughout the world,” said Maharaj.

He added that increasing global temperatures, sea level rise and water scarcity are all contributing factors. In creating awareness of these factors and to celebrate the day, The Food for Life Children’s Projects, a initiative within the national Food for Life structure, visited various communities and distributed wholesome vegan foods.

The organisation also conducts various workshops and seminars based on sustainable agriculture and eco-awareness. For more information, e-mail divesh@fflsa.org.
