Police and businesses unite to raise funds for CANSA

Local businesses teamed up with the police to raise funds for CANSA.

MALVERN SAPS in partnership with Escombe SPAR, MCS Consumable Trading and Swadist Malvern hosted a Cuppa for CANSA at Escombe SPAR on Thursday, 13 October. Samoosas, chicken breyani, a host of decadent cakes, tea and coffee were sold to raise funds for the worthy cause. Residents also participated in the shavathon, which contributed to the activities on the day.

“The Cuppa for CANSA is an annual event on Malvern SAPS calendar where businesses together with the police come on board not only to raise funds for cancer patients, but to create awareness for the different types of cancer – cervical, prostrate, breast and testicular. The increasing number of cancer patients shows that cancer is an illness that does not discriminate, it can affect anyone,” said corporate communication officer, W/O Radhika Marimuthu. She added that advice was also offered on the types of nutrition that will

benefit cancer patients. The importance of regular examinations was also emphasised where cancers are detected and treated in the early stages.

Escombe SPAR manager, Tjaart Nel, said they are willing to assist the community wherever they can. “We sponsored the cakes to sell to make money for the drive because we believe in supporting the community where we can as SPAR and we are committed to doing this fundraiser every year. This community is the back bone of our business and we would like to thank everybody who was involved in this drive,” he said.

“Monies from the Cuppa for CANSA fundraiser will be used for the treatment and education of cancer patients and the community at large. As a society and community, there is a moral obligation to help others through these charitable causes,” said W/O Marimuthu.

Station commander of Malvern SAPS, Lt-Col Valarine Reddy, said it was heart warming to note the generosity of the businesses that came on board to support this charitable cause. She further stated that she was pleased with the excellent support from the community. “The Cuppa for CANSA speaks for itself and irrespective of the amount denoted, all this adds up to ensure the treatment of a cancer sufferer who cannot afford this,” said Lt –Col Reddy.
