Lectures resume at UKZN

There was a low student turnout on the campus today.

THE academic programme is continuing on all UKZN campuses, however the Westville campus in on high alert.

According to Lesiba Seshoka, executive director of corporate relations at UKZN, reports received indicated a low student turnout on some campuses and attempts to disrupt lectures and tests on the Howard College campus this morning.

“Some students were detained for releasing fire extinguishers and crackers resulting in the disruption of academic activity. The students were handed over to Umbilo SAPS who subsequently released them.

Last night, Risk Management Services on the PMB campus had a breakthrough in their investigation into the recent spate of arson attacks. A vehicle carrying seven litres of petrol was intercepted at the Malherbe residence and three suspects were apprehended and handed over to SAPS. A fourth is still at large. Two of the suspects are UKZN students.

“The Westville Campus is on high alert after it experienced violent protests yesterday (Thursday, 13 October). There was a low student turnout on the campus today. Security Services (SAPS, RMS and private security) are currently monitoring a group of protestors at the residences,” said Seshoka.

He added that the university management condemned the unlawful activity in the strongest possible terms. ” Regrettably the vast majority of our students are being affected by this criminal activity.”
