Pupils trade their way to the top

Out of dozens of hopefuls, the team of four from Waterfall College, made the top five of the competitive JSE Challenge.

THE Grade 10 Waterfall College accounting team (Team VKL) made the top five in South Africa in the JSE Challenge.

The JSE Investment Challenge is a game that aims to teach South African pupils about investing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Each team is given an imaginary sum of R1 000 000 to invest in JSE-listed shares and their performance is tracked and measured against other teams from the period of March to September.

Team VKL, who entered the speculator portfolio, is made up of Vaughan Lacon-Allin, Kuhlekonke Majola, Lwazi Ncube and Sbonokuhle Ngcobo. The team will be flown up to Johannesburg on 21 October to hear the final placing and receive their awards.

Their Accounting teacher, Jayne Cansfield, said that the key to their success was their willingness, as a team, to go the extra mile and invest their own time, outside of class. “It has certainly paid off for them with these great results,” she said.

Keryn House, the marketer for Waterfall College, said, “Some of them have never flown before, let alone visited the JSE in Sandton, so the trip is an experience of a lifetime for these four Waterfall College boys.”
