Armed robbers target mother and daughter

A Hillary mother and her three-year-old daughter were targeted by three armed men while walking home recently.

A MOTHER and her daughter were traumatised after they were held at gunpoint in Arundel Road in Malvern recently.

Nokthula Shange said she was studying for her matric exams in Malvern and walks to fetch her daughter from crèche. The two were on their way home when three men confronted her and her three-year-old daughter at about 7.30pm. “I was about four houses away from where I stay when it happened. Two men walked past us in the opposite direction and greeted us. There was another man in front of us standing on the side of the road. He was the first one to pull a gun on us and he told me to give him everything that I had,” said the distraught 38-year-old.

The other two men then came back and they were also armed with guns. Shange handed over her handbag with R900 inside, her daughter’s school bag and a plastic packet filled with meat. “He then demanded my cellphone. I said it was in my bag. He told me that if I was lying I would see what would happen. He then searched me and found my phone hidden in the front of my pants. He then threatened to hit me. He said that if I scream, they would shoot me,” said Shange.

The three robbers walked away from the scene and Shange and her daughter rushed to the nearest house for help. “My daughter is okay, but what worries me now is that she uses the line “I will shoot you” and am worried that this will continue to stay with her. I am very scared to walk anywhere now,” she said.

“I wish that the police would patrol that road. I reported my case to the police and I encourage everyone to open a case when they are involved in an incident such as this so that the police are aware of the growing crime in the area,” pleaded Shange.
