Loud noise irks Caversham residents

Despite promises of reduced noise levels, the Caversham Glen residents said the music continued until the early hours throughout the weekend.

DESPITE the promise of decreased noise levels from Moyito Lounge in an open meeting with residents last week, the situation has remained unchanged.

The lounge’s owner, Nhlakanipho Dlamini, called a meeting with the residents last Thursday evening to address the problems they faced. The main issue that was highlighted was the noise levels that continue throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings until the early hours each morning.

Pierric Lagesse said that his children were busy studying for their matric exams and due to the loud noise, were not able to study. “The music plays through until Monday morning, sometimes until 4am and two hours later I need to get up and get ready for work.”

Another resident, Phulani (he declined to give his surname), said he only had two options available to him when his windows rattled from the music. “I either have to open my windows and hear the loud music or to stuff them with tissues so they don’t rattle at all.”

According to the bylaws, the music should be turned down after 9.30pm each evening and Dlamini agreed to enforce the changes. “I apologise for the problems that were caused. I will only be playing music inside the club instead of facing the speakers outwards. Sundays are one of my busiest days, but I will make sure that if I am not here, the staff will turn the music down,” said Dlamini.

Complaints from residents revealed that Dlamini’s promises were not fulfilled. According to a woman, whose name is known to the Highway Mail, the noise levels continued from Friday evening until 2am on Saturday morning and until about 3.30am on both Sunday and Monday morning. “Windows started rattling and carried on all day and night. I really cannot see this issue being resolved with his attitude.”

“We complained to the Metro Police and they said they had received other complaints as well and they did send officers to attend to it. We did not detect any reduction in the disturbance at any time,” she concluded.

Nhlakanipho Dlamini declined to comment.
