WATCH: Hundreds gather in memory of Gary Mackay

The highway community turned up in force to show their support for the Mackay family.

HUNDREDS of community members gathered at Duncan Park in Westville for the memorial walk in honour and memory of Gary Mackay, who was killed in his home while protecting his family last Saturday morning.

Shortly afterwards one of his high school friends launched a Go Fund Me campaign to help raise funds for the grieving family.

Paul Rose: “This walk is to honour the family and to show the community’s support and compassion. It is also to highlight crime and support the victims of crime.”

Stuart Daniels: “We walk to make it aware that crime is a big problem in our area and we are losing lives and as a community we need to do something.”

JP Geddes: “This is to create awareness and show our compassion. We want communities to take part and know what is going on around them.”

Shelley Turner Steen: “I have lived in this area for 16 years and this is just shocking. It’s unbelievable for this to happen to such a beautiful family.”

Brenda Coombe: “I was recently attacked by three men in my home and by the Grace of God they left me alone. This just has to stop. The admiration I have for the neighbourhoodwatch members that put themselves on the line. I can’t even begin to describe it.”

Yvette Thomson: “We are from the Chiltern Hills East Neighbourhood Watch and want to show support for the family and to help create awareness that the police are under resourced.”

Desigan Naidoo: “We knew Gary and worked with him for a few months and are here to show our support.”

Simon Hornby: “It’s such a terrible loss and I want to show my support by being here.”

Belinda Lotter: “To support Symone and her family and for the community to fight against crime.”
