Men encouraged to test for cancer

The free tests are made possible by theHollard Daredevil Run which men participate in countrywide to raise awareness about cancer.

THE Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), with the help of Hollard, gave free Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests in the Hollard Man Van to men over the age of 40 at the Westville Mall on Wednesday, 24 August.

PSA is a protein produced by both cancerous (malignant) and non-cancerous (benign) prostate tissue. High PSA levels may indicate inflammation of the prostate or even cancer. A blood test or finger prick test can establish if PSA levels are raised.

Within minutes of the van being set up, men came in numbers to have their PSA checked which took less than five minutes.

The free tests are made possible by the Hollard Daredevil Run which men participate in countrywide to raise awareness and at the same time, using the power of collective action to inspire positive change.

Sesethu Senene, CANSA community mobilser, service delivery, said, “The Hollard Man Van is shared between all participating regions that do the Daredevil Runu, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.”
