WBHS debaters make history

WBHS is the only school to win the Senior trophy two years in a row.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School pupils, Nicholas Herd, Sasa Dlamini and Jonathan Ross have won the Senior Durban Coastal Debating League again.

Nicholas Herd, Sasa Dlamini and Reagan Naidoo started in 2012 as a young and inexperienced Grade 8 debating team. Inspired and dedicated, they went on to win the Durban Coastal Debating League (DCDL) at the end of that season. They continued as the junior debating team in 2013. They progressed through to the quarter finals. Nicholas Herd was selected to represent the junior KZN team at the national tournament at the end of the season.

Still as the junior team in 2014, they progressed to the final round where they were runners up at the end of the season. Nicholas Herd was again selected for the junior KZN team. In 2015 the three boys were selected as the Westville Boys’ High School 1st debating team (all three now in Grade 11) and at the end of the season were crowned the senior DCDL champions. Nicholas Herd and Sasa Dlamini were selected to represent the KZN senior debating team.

This year, the boys were ready for the new season, but due to personal circumstances, Reagan Naidoo left the team and Jonathan Ross stepped up and joined the team. They were unstoppable and defended their title successfully. WBHS is the only school to win the senior trophy two years in a row. Nicholas and Sasa (both Grade 12 pupils) were also selected for the Senior KZN team.
