UPDATE: Cyclist fights back

One man died on the scene and the other was taken to hospital under police guard.

A CYCLIST who was attacked by two men near Giba Gorge on Sunday, 28 August, fought back, and is alleged to have stabbed two robbers.

According to Jethro Nyandeni, Giba Gorge manager, who was off duty when the incident happened, “I was told that one of our riders was on his way to the park when he was attacked by two men at the bridge just a few kilometres from Giba Gorge.

“The cyclist took out a knife and stabbed the two men. One died on the scene and from what I have gathered, the second man has died at the hospital,” he said.

Netcare 911, liaison officer, Chris Botha said paramedics responded to a call where two men were injured in Giba Gorge.

“Netcare 911 paramedics, their rescue unit and the Police Search and Rescue arrived at the scene and had to hike down a steep slope for about five hundred metres before they got to the first man who had died on scene.”

Botha said, the second man was found lying near a river, five hundred meters along the path.

“The team hiked another 500m meters along a path and found another man lying near a river also with a stab wound. The man was stabilised at the scene, placed on a ventilator and airlifted to the ambulance. He was then taken to a hospital in Chatsworth under the care of a Netcare 911 emergency care practitioner,” added Botha.

KZN police spokesman, Cpt Nqobile Gwala,said it was reported that the complainant was riding his bicycle when he was confronted by two men who wanted to rob him.

“The complainant took out a knife and fatally stabbed a 25-year-old man and injuring the other man. The injured man was taken to hospital under police guard. An inquest docket and attempted robbery case was opened at Mariannhill SAPS for investigation.
