Political tension leads to two murders in Inchanga

Police have arrested 41 people for public violence in Inchanga.

THE political tension in Inchanga resulted in a murder of a South African Communist Party (SACP) member, Nontsikelelo Blose (40) and an African National Congress (ANC) member, Xolani Ngcobo (38).

This follows the ongoing tension between the members of the SACP and the ANC in the Inchanga area which is home to James Nxumalo, outgoing eThekwini Mayor.

It is alleged that Blose was shot and killed by a person aligned to the ANC in full view of the residents and Ngcobo was shot and stoned to death in what was believe to be a revenge attack.

Police were on high alert in the area after several houses were set alight and commuters were left stranded as taxis and buses stopped operating after residents blockaded the roads with burning tyres in protest of the killings on Monday.

KZN police spokesman, Lt/Col Shooz Magudulela said Blose (40) was killed and another man was injured when they were attacked at Inchanga Township on Sunday.

“Two people were arrested for murder and will appear in court soon. The murder cases are now being investigated by the Hawks,” said Magudulela.

On Monday at 4am, people went on the rampage and barricaded roads with burning tyres and logs. Five houses were torched during the violent protest .

“A 38-year-old,Xolani Ngcobo, was attacked at his home at about 6am. He was stoned and shot dead. Police immediately mobilized police officers from the surrounding police stations.

“Members from various K9 units, Public Order Police units and Tactical Response Teams also responded to restore calm. A total of 41 suspects were arrested for public violence and are expected to appear in the Camperdown Magistrates’ Court,” he said.

Magudulela reported that the situation is currently calm and police are monitoring the area.

“We are appealing for any people who may have information which could lead to the arrest of murderers to contact Crime Stop on 086 001 0111.

“We also appeal to the community to refrain from committing acts of violence and criminality. Please co-operate with the security forces on the ground and allow the law to take its course,” added Magudulela.
