Robbers run amok in Malvern

Station commander, Lt-Col Valarine Reddy, commended the security guard for his actions which led to the arrest of the robber.

A WOMAN approached a business in the Malvern area ostensibly to buy a product that she had viewed a day earlier, according to Corporate Communications Officer for Malvern Police,W/O Radhika Marimuthu. “When the owners let the lady in, six armed men barged in. They held up the occupants of the business in the office. The robbers then fled with a safe and the victims then decided to drive to the police station. At the top of their road they saw the robbers trying to hijack another victim,” explain W/O Marimuthu. When the robbers saw them they opened fire, and a bullet grazed the victim’s leg. One of the robbers tried to flee but was run over by a car while others jumped over walls trying to make a getaway.

“A while later, a few roads away, a woman drove into her yard when she saw a man standing at her wall, brandishing a firearm. She managed to caution her children in the car not to open the door. The woman then reopened her gate and tried to drive away but the gunman clung onto her vehicle. He banged at the window, trying to fire not knowing that his magazine had fallen out earlier. The woman then blew the hooter, alerting a security guard. The security guard arrested the gunman,” she added.

Station Commander, Lt-Col Valarine Reddy, commended the security guard for his actions which led to the arrest of the robber. “Investigations are continuing. Cases of business robbery, attempted murder and two counts of attempted hijacking have been registered. Anyone with information in this regard can call SAPS Malvern Detectives on 031 489 9624, 489 9629 or CrimeStop on 086 001 0111,” said W/O Marimuthu.
