Pupil awarded scholarship to study in Costa Rica

Star College Boys' High School has chosen Reshavan Naicker as its SPAR Star of the Month.

RESHAVAN Naicker (16), Star College’s deputy head boy is one of eight South African pupils to be awarded a prestigious two-year United World Colleges (UWC) Scholarship.

He received a 50 percent scholarship and left South Africa to attend the UWC Costa Rica in Central America in the middle of August. Naicker went through the rigorous selection process in March this year. In addition to submitting the initial application form which included his academic results, essays and references, he attended two days of the regional and national selections which included role play, interviews and group activities.

He will represent South Africa at the Costa Rican College which is one of the 16 UWC colleges around the world. The UWC movement consists of more than 60 000 alumni and other members in virtually every country in the world. It is the mission of the UWC movement to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future by delivering a challenging and transformational educational experience to a diverse cross section of pupils, inspiring them to create a more peaceful and sustainable future. In South Africa the work of the UWC is carried out on a volunteer basis by alumni via the UWC South African Trust, a public benefit organisation.

The academic programme for 16 to 19 year-olds at UWC colleges and schools is based on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Pupils benefit from the challenging and balanced academic qualification which is recognised by the world’s leading universities. As well as studying six subject areas, pupils complete an extended essay, theory of knowledge course and a creativity, action, service component.

When asked about his achievement Reshavan said: “I am excited about this opportunity to represent South Africa and am particularly looking forward to interacting with pupils from around the world. I believe that by opening ourselves up to new experiences, we allow our minds to grow and we can expand our horizons and become more accepting of different cultures allowing us to become better global citizens and more understanding of the challenges facing humanity. I love learning and experiencing new and different cultures and learning about how other people live their lives, so this opportunity is going to be unbelievable. I am hoping that my success will encourage others to apply in future. Star College has provided me with an incredible grounding, exposing me to a demanding academic programme and for this I am most grateful.”

Reshavan has been assisting the UWC SA Trust in raising funds to cover the 50 percent portion of his fees not covered by his scholarship.
