Judo club donates to the AIDS centre

The idea was inspired by the International AIDS Conference 2016

STUDENTS of the Highway Judo Club, based in Waterfall, collected clothes, shoes, toys, books and various household items to donate to the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT).

Sensei Rob Jordaan, said the students collected these item with the help of their parents. “The idea came from the parents committee during the International AIDS Conference 2016 which was held in Durban last month.

“We thought of a local organisation which assisted people who are infected and affected with HIV/AIDS and chose HACT.

Jordaan said the children were excited with the idea and collected bags of various items.

”Judo is the second most proactive sport and it teaches self defence, coordination, balance and self confidence,” he said.

The club also teaches visual impaired children from Ethembeni School in Inchanga and the Open Air School in Durban.

HACT fundraising and marketing manager, Claire Hodgkinson thanked the club for their generous donation.

“The clothes will go to one of our income generating projects which assist 20 families in the valley.

“The families sell the clothes in their communities to get an income.”

She added that the housing items will be sold in their second-hand clothing shop and the books will be sold at the centre’s second-hand book shop.
