Councillor calls for more police presence in Pinetown

After two of the recent incidents at the Pinetown Home Affairs and SARS, newly-appointed Ward Councillor, Melanie Fraser has stepped in.

FOLLOWING the recent horrific attacks on residents in the vicinity of the SARS and Home Affairs offices in the Pinetown CBD, Ward 18 councillor Melanie Fraser Brauteseth, called for the urgent increase in SAPS presence in the crime hotspot.

“I have conducted an on-site inspection and advised the security companies at SARS and Home Affairs to be more vigilant, not only in detecting criminal elements but also in warning residents of potential dangers.

“I am also working with Warrant Officer Maphumulo, the SAPS liaison for the Pinetown CPF. At my urging, Maphumulo has committed to extra patrols in the area as well as undercover agents to identify those responsible. I will continue to monitor this situation and will hold the SAPS to their commitments in this regard,” said Fraser Brauteseth.

Her other concern was that many bystanders did not help the victims. “We have to stand up for our communities. It could well be one of us attacked tomorrow. We cannot stand idly by. We have to make criminals unwelcome in our Pinetown community.”
