Former councillor set on tackling crime after attack in Pinetown

We are planning a placard demonstration outside the Home Affairs offices to highlight the problem - Visvin Reddy.

FORMER ANC councillor and Chatsworth branch chairman, Visvin Reddy, was stabbed twice in the arm during a mugging in Pinetown on Monday, 8 August.

Reddy was with his wife in the car on their way to the Pinetown Home Affairs when they were attacked by a group of men who surrounded their vehicle and demanded their belongings.

Reddy wrote on his Facebook after the incident: “Here at Pinetown SAPS to report the attack. Fortunately the Police are aware of the high incidence of crime near the Home Affairs offices in Pinetown,” he said.

He also posted that it was important that all victims of crime open up cases as it would aid in planning operations. Pinetown SAPS has a special unit set up with policemen in plain clothes who are patrolling the area.  Reddy said he was prepared to assist in their investigations by driving through that area again and again.

Reddy said, “On Monday, 15 August we are planning a placard demonstration outside the Home Affairs offices to highlight the plight of people who try to visit this institution. I am calling for additional police to be deployed in the area while another safer office is identified. I also believe that the full Home Affairs services must be offered once again at the Chatsworth offices.”

Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Cpt Bongumusa Manqele said that they are aware of the incident and will give a detailed report soon.

The Highway Mail has carried a number of reports of people being attacked in this area, on one occasion an 80-year-old woman and her daughter were set upon by thugs, thrown to the ground and their jewellery ripped from their necks.

As recently as last week, police warned motorists to lock their car doors and close windows when driving in this area.
