CROW unveils antelope enclosure

Under an African Sky is a voluntary organisation started by Compass Medical Waste Services eight years ago. The purpose of this organisation is to raise money for animals in need.

THE Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) unveiled its baby antelope enclosure on Thursday, 28 July. Funds raised from the 2016 Contrasts of Africa calendar campaign were used to build the new enclosure.

CROW rescues, rehabilitates and releases more than 50 injured and orphaned antelope every year. The vast majority of these animals are left orphaned as a result of poaching and illegal dog hunting. The enclosure has heaters inside which ensure that during rehabilitation, baby antelope, are kept warm and comfortable. The new enclosure will see the babies recover with their own species for the best chances of getting better.

nder an African Sky is a voluntary organisation started by Compass Medical Waste Services eight years ago. The purpose of this organisation is to raise money for animals in need. “Judy and Ian du Randt, founders of Compass have a passion for animals and their passion reaches much further than simply providing financial support. Currently they own ten cats (four of which are feral), three German Shepherd puppies and a bunny. They are determined to do whatever they can to give a voice to the voiceless. The sole project which Under an African Sky is involved in, is the calendar campaign. The team of nine dedicated volunteers design, print, market and sell A2 wall calendars and CD size desk calendars and to date, with the help of generous sponsors, has raised R1.3 million for animal welfare,” said Marketer at Compass Medical Waste Services, Tenley Cummings.

The majority of these funds have been donated to CROW which has used it for projects such as the refurbishment and expansion of CROW’s surgery units, employing an Environmental Education Officer in CROW’s Educare Centre, as well as contributing towards the production and printing of the centre’s educational booklets and the purchasing of two vehicles to assist in the rescue of injured animals and later the release of these animals into their natural environment.

The event was also a platform for CROW to launch its 2017 Reflections of Africa Wildlife Calendars at R180 each, while the CD-size Desk calendars are selling at R60 each which are available to order.
