Hijacker shoots motorist

Brian Jackson of Blue Security said the incident was the third shooting reported in the week, while further armed robberies had been reported in Danville Road in Virginia, Sarnia Road in Hillary and in Trafford Road in Westmead.

A MOTORIST was shot in an attempted hijacking in Escombe on Friday morning, 8 July at 9.50am. Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said the incident was the latest in a spate of violent crimes reported across the city from Durban North and Morningside to Summerveld and Hillary over the past week.

“A gang of hijackers attempted to hijack a motorist of his Ford Fiesta in Stella Road and fired a shot at a motorist who just happened to be driving past the scene of the crime. A bullet grazed the motorist’s leg. EMRS paramedics attended the scene and treated the victim for his injury,” he said.

Jackson said the incident was the third shooting reported in the week, while further armed robberies had been reported in Danville Road in Virginia, Sarnia Road in Hillary and in Trafford Road in Westmead. He said that a cashier was injured during an armed robbery at a business premises in Sarnia Road in the early hours Friday, 8 July.

“Four armed men entered the shop pretending to be customers and held up the staff at gunpoint. They fled with cigarettes and cash in a red Toyota Tazz. Paramedics attended the scene to treat the victim,” he said. Bellair SAPS attended the scene of the crime and are investigating.

Jackson advised business and homeowners to alert their staff and to be vigilant considering the recent spike in serious and violent crimes. “We urge homeowners to remind their domestic workers to be extremely careful in the home during the day and to ensure doors are locked and that they carry a panic button with them while they are going about their work. It’s also important to regularly remind employees to be security conscious when locking up and opening business premises,” he said.
