Rapist sentenced to 5 years in jail

Simphiwe Biyase (25) was sentenced to five years' imprisonment for attempted rape on Wednesday, 29 June.

TWENTY-five year old Simphiwe Biyase was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for attempted rape in the Pinetown Sexual Offences Court on 29 June.

According to communications officer at Pinetown SAPS, Capt Bongumusa Manqele, the victim (24) was walking along Berkshire Drive in New Germany with her sister in August 2015 at about 6.45pm when she noticed a man approaching from the opposite direction.

“When she and her sister tried running away, the accused grabbed the victim and pushed her to the ground. While the accused was attempting to rape the victim, the victim’s sister screamed for help and three vehicles stopped and the accused fled the scene. The drivers and the community members chased the accused and he was arrested for attempted rape. The case was opened at Pinetown police station for investigation,” said Manqele.

The KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Bhekinkosi Langa, said: “We thank the community for not taking the law into their own hands and immediately contacting the police who then apprehended the accused. Working together with the community will reduce the crime rates in our province.”
