Grab a coffee in a cone for charity

A pop-up store with a difference has opened its doors at the Pavilion shopping centre as all of its profit is donated to a NPO that empowers underprivileged children.

LOOKING for the perfect subject matter for your next Instagram post? Head on down to the Social Drinks pop-up store at the Pavilion and grab the delectable coffee in a cone, and help raise funds for the underprivileged.

The business is completely non-profit as all of the funds raised through the sale of snacks and coffees at the store are used by its parent NPO, Social Projects. The funds go to its iLearning Centres, which are set up in underprivileged communities. “Children are taught on tablets, from maths and science to English and computer skills. All of this is extra-curricular and there are about 15 to 20 pupils per classroom,” said Deon Makgati, the store manager and senior barista.

The store also has an LED counter that shows you how many children were fed thanks to the amount of coffee being sold. The pop-up store will be open at the Pavilion shopping centre in the food court for about three months, but with support from the community, it could extend its stay.

“The most famous item on our menu is the coffee in a cone and is the most tweeted about coffee in the world. It was started by a man named Dane from a coffee company called The Grind. He gave the organisation the go-ahead to use the cones as a means for fundraising,” said Deon.

The delectable drink is R40 and consists of a sugar cone with a chocolate coating inside that is formulated to hold hot drinks. “Some do put sugar into the coffee but if you give it enough time to fuse in the cone, the chocolate will blend with the coffee itself,” said Deon.

Another hot favourite is the sticky hot chocolate, and for those that are banting, there are a range of yummy treats on sale too. “It’s not just coffee, it’s coffee with a conscience,” said Deon.

The store is open from Monday to Thursday from 9am to 7pm, from 9am to 9pm on Friday and Saturday and from 9am to 5pm on a Sunday. Contact Deon on 072 909 2728.
