Charity drive offers free clothes to underprivileged

Thousands of items of clothes will be made available to lower Molweni residents for free on Saturday, 25 June.

MORE than 400 large black bags have been filled with clothing. These clothes will be available for free to the residents of lower Molweni to choose from at a pop up store, hosted by Thomas More College and St Agnes Church.

In a joint outreach project between various schools in the upper highway and local churches, the homeless and disadvantaged will benefit from these pop up street stores. Thomas More College and St Agnes Church in Kloof will set up shop at Philangathemba (lower Molweni). St Mary’s DSG, Kloof and City Hill, Pinetown will host it at City Hill in Pinetown, 56 Mariannhill Road, Pinetown. Curro Hillcrest and the Hillcrest Presbyterian Church will open a store at the Upper Molweni Community Centre.

TMC’s pupils took part in a civvies day on 19 May and each pupil was tasked with donating a bag of good quality, second-hand clothing. The bags were dropped off in a classroom and parents, staff and pupils of TMC along with members of St Agnes Church sorted it into relevant bags for all age groups, men, women, boy and girls and babies’ boys and girls.

Posters and pamphlets will be shared throughout the community and the pop up street store is open for any homeless or underprivileged person. “A shop assistant will take each person around and they can choose up to 10 items each. They will also receive a light meal,” said Philip Lanz, the head of outreach at TMC. “The response we have had is phenomenal and a big thank you goes out to everyone who supported the drive.”

The pop up street store will be open on Saturday 25 June from 8am to noon and if you would like to volunteer to assist on the day, e-mail planz@thomasmore.co.za
