UPDATE: Train smashes into truck

Restoration as well as getting the train in working order will cost about R5-million.

ELEVEN people were injured when a train smashed into a truck trailer in Northdene on Fairfield Road around 1pm on 17 June.

Rescue Care’s operations director, Garrith Jamieson, said paramedics responded to an accident involving a train. “On arrival, paramedics found that a train had crashed into the trailer of a truck. Two train drivers as well as nine passengers had sustained various injuries, ranging from minor to moderate, and were stabilised on scene before being transported to various hospitals. The truck driver was not injured,” he said.

Jamieson said that at this stage it is unclear what caused the collision, however SAPS was on scene and is investigating.

Spokesperson as well as HOD for marketing and communications for PRASA, Zama Nomnganga, the railway will be closed today. “Getting the railway to its working condition will most probably take the entire day. The the line in the area will be closed until further notice,” he said.

Nomnganga said although they don’t have the exact figures, restoration as well getting the train in working order will cost about R5-million.
