Owner of truck responsible for Field’s Hill deaths to appear in court

Govender will appear in the Verulum Court on 13 July.

THE owner of Sagekal Logistics, Gregory Govender, is expected to appear in court in July to possibly face charges for the company’s responsibility in the Field’s Hill crash on September 5, 2013 which left 24 people dead and some injured.

According to a 2014 report by Rootman, the truck that Sanele May was driving was not roadworthy.

Rootman shared the report that was initially done for Theasen Pillay, the attorney for Sagekal Logistics, the company that owns the truck, and refuted media reports about the truck being roadworthy.

According to the report, overwhelming evidence indicating that the brake systems of both the horse and trailer were in a state of deterioration prior to and at the time of the accident was found. The truck driver, Sanele Goodness May, pleaded guilty to 24 counts of culpable homicide, two of fraud, one charge of entering South Africa illegally, two of being in possession of fake driver’s licences, one charge of operating a vehicle without a valid professional driving permit and one of failing to comply with a road traffic sign.

He was sentenced to eight years and 10 months.

Fields Hill Helping Hands wrote on Facebook, “Your turn has finally come Mr Govender, where you need to stand accountability for your poor actions or decision-making. Mr Govender, while these families have struggled on, you have lived comfortable with your family.

“You have never contacted these families, tried to assist them or even apologised. Yes, some may still be angry with Sanele, however it is you they want to see stand trial.”

Govender will appear in the Verulum Court on 13 July.
