Kearsney College celebrates double win against Hilton

Kearsney College's 1st team beat Hilton's rugby team 20-8 and hockey team 5-1.

KEARSNEY College hosted Hilton College at the weekend (4 and 5 June) and beat them in both rugby and hockey matches.

Kearsney’s first rugby team played Hilton in the return leg of the double header fixture in good playing conditions on their 95th anniversary Founders’ Day weekend. Both teams were in good form and the match promised to be a humdinger and probably a decider as to the second-best team in KZN.

First points of the match came from Hilton after a breakdown infringement by Kearsney. The hosts soon replied with a penalty to level at 3-3, which remained until half-time. Both teams attacked and defended well during the first half.

Kearsney started the second half with a different approach – a more direct attack – and it seemed to work well. Only resolute defence by the visitors prevented further points for most of the half, which ended in a final score of 20-8 to Kearsney.

In hockey news, Kearsney’s first hockey team was extremely focused and the return after six weeks of vice-captain, Blake Tyack, and frontline flicker, Guy Morgan, definitely boosted the team. The younger players displayed their potential despite injured senior players, Matthew Lees, Luke de Vlieg and Grant Oliver, still missing. The game started off at a frantic pace. Late in the first half, James Stamatis made a baseline run and finished off to put the hosts 2-0 up at half-time.

Kearsney came out firing in the second half and played as a strong team, looking solid in defence and dangerous on attack to ensure a final win of 5-1 to Kearsney.

In canoeing news, Kearsney’s Callum Davis has been selected for the KZN U16 team going to the SA Marathon Champs in Cape Town this weekend (11 and 12 June). Tim Marshall will also be travelling to compete in the U18 contest.
