Metro cop shot at home

Upon fleeing the scene, one of the robbers fell in the pool on the property. A wet body was later found and reported at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Umlazi.

A DURBAN Metro Police officer was shot at his home in Seaview on Saturday, 28 May at 8.30pm.

According to the Bellair Police, the incident happened during an attempted robbery at an Inspectors house. Communications Officer W/O Prakash Kumar said they responded to a call from a police radio. “The officer made the call himself asking for help. He was shot on the left side of his stomach.”

He added that upon arrival, the police officer still had his gun and the radio on hand. “The robbers had already fled the scene by the time we got there. They had opened fire and the officer returned it, injuring two of them,” he explained.

He said the necessary authorities were called to the scene and the officer was taken to hospital where he is said to be making progress in recovery. Acting senior superintendent Wiseman Mchunu said officers must be careful. “We are sadden by the news as a department and we wish the members to exercise more caution,” he said. According to reports, Mchunu urged residents to be more vigilant as house robberies and hijackings are on the rise. He encouraged neighbours to always assist in calling the police if they see anything suspicious.
