Law firm encourages girl pupils

Girl pupils taught to dream big.

LEGAL entity, Legal Aid SA, invited girl pupils for a tour of their offices in Pinetown and to teach them about the working environment on Thursday, 26 May.

This was part of the Take A Girl Child To Work Day campaign, sponsored by Cell C, which was launched in 2003. Four Grade 12 pupils from Mariannridge and KwaSanti Secondary Schools, of which three of them wish to study law, spent the day asking and learning about opportunities offered by Legal Aid SA.

Legal Aid SA provides professional legal advice and representation to those who cannot afford it.

Regional communications officer at Legal Aid, Bongani Mahlangu, said they partnered with Cell C to help and encourage girl pupils make the right choices about which careers they would like to follow.

“Legal Aid SA is not made up of lawyers only, we do have other departments that pupils can make their careers.” Mahlangu said most of the matriculants do not gets a clear understanding and knowledge of the careers that they could take and ending up making last-minute decisions. “It is important to know what you want to study while you are still in school,” he said.

One of the pupils, Precious Mkhize, said the day was an eye-opener for her and she can now choose wisely what she wants to study.

“I am a big dreamer and I want to have a bright and successful future. It is so sad to see what girls my age get up to nowadays, it is shocking,” she said.

The pupils were also treated to lunch and goodies.
