It was stolen during an armed robbery.

A STATE firearm which was stolen during an armed robbery in Benoni in December 2009 was recovered from a 28-year-old man in New Germany.

Pinetown visible police were doing their normal patrol duties along Campbell Road in New Germany when they spotted a suspicious-looking vehicle with two occupants inside on Sunday, 22 May.

“Police stopped the vehicle and upon searching the occupants, one was found in possession of a firearm and eight rounds of ammunition. The man was immediately placed under arrest and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Lt Bongumusa Manqele.

When the firearm was tested, it was established that it is a state firearm and it was stolen during an armed robbery in Benoni in December 2009.

“The firearm has been sent for ballistic tests to determine whether it was used in the commission of other crimes in the country,” said Manqele.
