Informal settlers block M19

Informal settlements were badly affected as there is a river that runs through those areas.

PEOPLE who reside in the informal settlement along the M19 blocked roads on Sunday after the heavy rains flooded their shacks.

Motorists who were travelling towards Pinetown, Springfield and Umngeni had to turn around and use alternative routes. The angry community protested and burnt tyres in the cold weather, complaining about the terrible conditions which they live under.

The Highway community was divided on social media platforms as some people felt sorry for the protesters and others were furious with their behaviour.

Ward 23 councillor, Themba Mtshali, said the office of the mayor and police had to intervene to calm the situation.

“The people wanted someone to inspect their houses after the heavy rains. As the councillor, I could not attend to their situation on the day as there were other places that needed urgent attention.”

Mtshali said Quarry Road West, New Germany and Palmiet Road informal settlements were badly affected as there is a river that runs through those areas.
