Police arrest alleged armed robbers

The men were also linked to another case of house-breaking in Caversham Glen.

THREE men who attempted to rob a house in Kloof were arrested in New Germany on Thursday, 5 May.

According to Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Lt Bongumusa Manqele, it is alleged that on the same day at about 10.25am, the complainant (47) was at her house with her gardener in Hayfield Road, Kloof when they saw a silver VW Polo parked at the gate.

The gardener went to the gate to ask the men what they were looking for, and they said they were looking for a Mr Smith and drove away. Manqele said it is alleged that the men returned a few minutes later and bashed the dining room door, trying to force their way inside the house.

“The complainant pressed the panic button and the men fled the scene. Police were alerted and they started searching for the three men in the area. Durban Dog Unit members spotted the car driving in New Germany and they called for backup.”

He said other police members arrived and the three men were arrested. “One of them was found in possession of an unlicensed gun and ammunition. The men were also linked to another case of house-breaking in Minorca Road, Caversham Glen, where the gate to the premises had been broken down,” he said.

The men fled the scene when they saw a security vehicle. Police discovered that the car which was used was a rented vehicle and the men had used false number plates.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni, commended police on the swift reaction that led to the arrests.

“We will continue to ensure that this province’s citizens are safe and protected against ruthless criminals,” she said.

The men will be charged for housebreaking.
