Youth unite for a better future in SA

More than a dozen youth from the greater Queensburgh area gathered along Sarnia to raise awareness against the social evils plaguing society.

THE youth arm of the Women and Men of Valour and Youth of Valour gathered along Sarnia Road to raise awareness against the social evils it believes are troubling society.

The youth development organisation aims to create a snowball effect by first impacting the individual, who will in turn pass on the knowledge to their families, who will then help to create positive change in their communities. “Young people should play an active role to fight against the social evils that are polluting and hindering society,” said Kwazini Zulu, chairman of the youth group. “There is currently a stereotype associated with the youth of today, but there are some of us who want to play a positive role in assisting the authorities.”

The group gathered with placards at a local park, some blazoned with the hashtag #YouthAgainstCrime, Bible verses, ‘No drugs’, ‘Say no to crime’ and ‘Enough is enough’. With the help of the Metro Police, the group of passionate youngsters marched with their signs from the intersection of Coedmore Road and Sarnia Road to Phambili High School.

Zulu noted the social evils currently plaguing the youth ranged from drug and alcohol abuse and teenage pregnancy to school drop-outs and crime. “The awareness campaign was to send out a message that we have been silent for too long and that we, the youth, are going to stand up.”

“Our second objective is to form relationships with the local councillor, the neighbourhood watches and the CPF so that we are able to be a part of and involved in those structures,” said Zulu.

He called for other youth throughout the Queensburgh area to join them in creating a positive change in the community.

“It is a brilliant initiative and is wonderful to see the youth getting involved. Awareness is certainly a great place to begin and it would be great to see more youth getting involved in positive campaigns such as this one. I hope that the group only grows from strength to strength,” said Chris van den Berg, Ward 64 councillor.
