PHOTOS: Klaarwater grannies win Gogolympics

This year's Gogolympics was held in partnership with the eThekwini Municipality, The Fisher’s Net and the KZN Department of Sports and Recreation.

Grannies from Klaarwater were the proud winners of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre sixth annual Gogolympics, which were held at Molweni Sport Ground on Friday, 22 April.

Seven grannies’ teams from across the Valley of 1 000 Hills participated and Klaarwater beat last year’s winners, Dassenhoek.

This year’s Gogolympics was held in partnership with the eThekwini Municipality, The Fisher’s Net and the KZN Department of Sports and Recreation.

The Gogolympics aims to improve the health of grannies who are impacted by South Africa’s HIV/AIDS crisis and face daily struggles, such as caring for orphaned grandchildren.

The spirit of the grannies was soaring, with each team dancing their way onto the ground at the beginning of the day and supporting their fellow team-members with hugs and cheers.

Sister Cwengi Myeni, the co-founder of the games, said this year’s event was the biggest yet. “We had more than 1 000 gogos in attendance, and for each of them it is an annual highlight in their calendar.

“We would like to thank all our partners and sponsors. So many generous businesses made this event possible by donating everything from food to sporting equipment. We would also like to thank the Molweni community who hosted the event for the first time,” said Myeni.

The winning teams for each category of sports were:

– Netball – Molweni

– Soccer – Inchanga

– Relay races – KwaNyuswa

– Pass-the-ball – Klaarwater

– Ring-the-stick – Klaarwater

– Rugby ball throw – Jane Khumalo (KwaNgcolosi)

– Jukskei – Bongiwe Dlamini (KwaNgcolosi)

– Team spirit award – Inchanga
