Deaf Jack Russell found after 20m cliff fall

Jack was found in good condition and reunited with his owner.

A JACK Russell, Jack, that went missing in Winston Park last Wednesday was found on Thursday, 21 April. He went missing when he got off his leash and fell down a 20-metre cliff while out for a walk with his owner.

Andreas Mathios, SACAN branch manager, said they received a call from the Winston Park Guardians about the incident.

“We assisted with coordinating the rescue team, including RescueTech, the SPCA and other members involved in the search,” said Mathios.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA received the call on the emergency after-hours number regarding the deaf, 16-year-old male Jack Russell.

Inspector Petra Abrams and Petros Simamane of the SPCA responded to the call for help and were later met by other search and rescue personnel.

The inspectors, along with a community search team, looked for over four hours for the beloved pet, but sadly the search was called off after there was no sign of Jack and a tracking dog could not pick up his scent. It was thought that Jack must have survived the fall and run into Giba Gorge.

The dog was spotted by a resident and member of SACAN who rallied the information through the SACAN app, Bull Horns, and it was found in good condition.

Lisa Mörck, PR and outreach officer for the Kloof and Highway SPCA, said, “We were all so relieved to receive the news that Jack had been found the following day and safely re-united with his owner. Thank you to rescue personnel and concerned members of the public for the combined effort that played a role in ensuring Jack was happily returned to his family.”
