Teenager steps it up for youth centre

Every step Laaeqa Hoosen takes in the East Coast Radio Big Walk on Sunday, 22 May will be with the purpose to provide aid for the 120 children in the care of the home.

FOURTEEN-year-old Laaeqa Hoosen has taken up the ‘Walk With Purpose’ Challenge to raise funds for the Malvern Child and Youth Care Centre. Every step she takes in the East Coast Radio Big Walk on Sunday, 22 May, will be with the purpose to provide aid for the 120 children in the care of the home.

“Laaeqa approached us to see where she could be of assistance as part of her Presidents’ Club community project. With the ECR Big Walk coming up, we identified our ‘Walk With Purpose’ volunteer fundraising project as a fantastic opportunity for her to raise funds and awareness for the children’s home,” said PR and fundraising manager for Malvern Child and Youth Care Centre, Lee Jarrett.

“Family is where one’s story begins and where love never ends. However, this is not the case for so many children at the home who are in desperate need of physical, emotional and spiritual care. It is a place of safety and the only real home many of them will ever know, but like most children’s homes across the country, this one is also under threat because of growing needs and lack of funding, ” she said.

“It is truly heart-warming to see Laaeqa’s enthusiasm to get involved to make a difference in the lives of children in need, and we encourage others to join her in taking up this challenge. Remember that its not just fundraising, you will be helping us to raise awareness for the rights of children to be loved, nurtured and not harmed in any way,” said Jarrett.
