Shepstone Road retaining wall still stands

The contractors were breaking through an opening to pull cables through that needed to be relocated for the GO!Durban construction.

THERE have been concerns about roadworks and the retaining wall on Shepstone Road, New Germany possibly being pulled down.

The head of the eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA), Thami Manyathi, said, “The wall in question was not being broken down. The contractors were breaking through an opening to pull cables through that needed to be relocated for the GO!Durban construction.”

Manyathi said the section in question is possibly one of the most complicated sections of this contract of the project due to the numerous services in this vicinity (Vodacom, MTN, Neotel, Telkom, a 100 MVa high-voltage line, 10 medium-voltage electricity lines, two stormwater lines, a 300-millimetre water main and a trunk sewer line).

“When the construction of the wall started, many of these services were not on the previous drawings,” he said.

He said the GO!Durban team, along with the design team, liaised with all of these service providers to find a reasonable solution for relocation.

“Tenders had to go out for these relocations, which took some time. Everything is now in place for these services to be relocated,” he said.

The work in this section has commenced and the Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, ITS and Neotel services are in the process of being relocated. There is a deep trench dug in front of the wall to lower these service into place.

Manyathi assured that once all the services are relocated, construction of this wall can continue.
