8 things to know about the new Whatsapp Encryption

Instant messaging service WhatsApp announced this week that it would strengthen privacy for its more than one billion users. Here’s what you need to know.

Facebook owned instant messaging service Whatsapp’s latest version will use security technology that prevents any interception as messages and media travel between devices.

Here are five things you need to know about the new encryption:

It is available only when you download the latest version of the Whatsapp.

The service ensures only you and the person you’re communicating with can read what is sent, and nobody in between, not even WhatsApp.

The message is secured with a lock that only you have the key needed to unlock.

The feature does not need to be activated and happens automatically when you update your Whatsapp messaging.

All media which includes video, audio, images and files are also encrypted end-to-end.

Group chats won’t have the encryption feature until everyone in the group is on the newer version of Whatsapp.

The encryption uses ‘The Signal Protocol’ designed by Open Whisper Systems to keep third parties like governments and cyber criminals away.

This feature has sent governments and security agencies into a frenzy because it will be tougher for law enforcement and security agencies to intercept your private messages. So you are safe.
