UPDATE: Former Pinetown policeman killed on the M19

His funeral will take place on Saturday, 9 April at the Christian Centre Church in Mariannhill. The service will start at 10am.

THE news of the passing of former Pinetown policeman, W/O Solomon Mbhele, came as a shock to the police industry and people who knew him.

Mbhele died after a crash on the M19 on Friday afternoon when his car hit a stationary vehicle on the busy road near Westville.

According to Crisis Medical’s Kyle van Reenen, paramedics arrived on scene shortly after 4pm to find the light state motor vehicle had crashed at high speed with a road maintenance vehicle.

“The driver and only occupant of the vehicle was found trapped in the badly wrecked vehicle, having suffered fatal injuries. He was declared dead on paramedics’ arrival,” he said.

Mbhele, who was based at KwaMashu SAPS, was the Pinetown SAPS communications officer before moving to the provincial office.

KZN police spokesman, Major Zwane, who had worked with Mbhele at the provincial office, said they were very shocked and sorry to hear about his death.

“Mbhele was a very dedicated police officer and very good at his job and respected everyone he worked with,” said Zwane.

“What an intelligent young man, what a loss,” said Pinetown CPF chairman, Matthews Buthelezi, who only learnt the news of Mbhele’s passing on Monday. “I can’t believe that such a wonderful soul could live us so sudden.

“Mbhele studied his way up his ladder. He once told me that education was very important in his line of work if he wanted to go further in his life and reach his full potential.”

Buthelezi said Mbhele was a friendly person and easy to work with. “He was ambitious, had drive and knew exactly what he wanted from his life. Condolences to his family,” he added.
