Daveys celebrate 50 years of ‘partnership’

"We would be lying if we said we never argue, a good argument is good for the relationship," they said.

HILLCREST residents, Marge and George Davey, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, 19 March.

They survived a war together and were brave enough to pack up their lives for a new start on a different continent. They were ‘war babies’, born in London, England in 1938 and evacuated into Buckinghamshire after the war broke out in 1940.

“We did not meet up until 1963 and married in 1965,” said Marge. They will both be turning 78 this November.

“We left England on a contract with Roberts Construction in 1972 to Zambia, and with two small boys we sailed to Cape Town on the Union Castle Liner, an ex troop ship, the Orania.

On reaching Durban, the construction company asked the family to stay and they never looked back. They returned to England only for holidays. “South Africa is our home, we wouldn’t be anywhere else in the world,” they said.

The Daveys lived in Ashley for 30 years, then 15 years ago moved to Hillcrest. “I built the house that we live in now,” George proudly stated.

They have three sons, Andrew, Greig and Scott, and seven grandchildren. The couple said every decision is made together.

“We would be lying if we said we never argue, a good argument is good for the relationship,” they said.

When asked about their thoughts on marriage, George said, “There is no such thing as love, its a partnership.”
