Phambili receives R100 000 science donation

The donation was made possible by the IQRAA Trust, a humanitarian organisation that benefits charities, welfare organisations and educational institutions.

PHAMBILI High School received science lab material and equipment to the value of R100 000 on Tuesday, 1 March.

The donation was made possible by the IQRAA Trust, a humanitarian organisation that benefits charities, welfare organisations and educational institutions. Chairman of the organisation, Dr Mahmoud Youssef Baker, said their aim was to better South African society through education.

“The IQRAA Trust provides funds and support to students to further their academic studies. Since our establishment, we have helped over 800 institutions countrywide and thousands of students academically.

“We support schools with science labs to allow students access to modern science and technology because we believe that education is the key towards meaningful economic development in which we can address challenges in the country,” he said.

Iqra is Arabic for ‘read’ and Baker said that the name ties in with their aims as a trust.

The official hand-over ceremony was hosted at the school’s newly-renovated science lab. Principal, Mr L Luthuli, showed guests a Powerpoint presentation of the school’s transformation during his tenure. “I came to Phambili in 2012 and together with funding from businesses, we’ve been able to transform the school. We are highly appreciative of the donation made by the IQRAA Trust to our school. The spotlight will now be on our pupils to do well in science, we hope our 2016 results will improve drastically with these new facilities to aid pupils in their learning,” said Luthuli.

Guests included KZN education department officials, both provincial and district, as well as the principal of Brettonwood High School, Mr N Dlamini. Former teacher and a friend of Phambili High School, Linda Ntuli said the pupils now have a chance to expand their minds with science. “Science helps build just as it can destroy things. We hope our pupils will invent things that will help determine a better future for all,” he said. He praised the IRQAA Trust for its donation and said it will help continue the school’s legacy.

DoE heads hailed the trust and principal.
