Hirsch’s celebrates World Sleep Day

Hirsch's Hillcrest and Hillcrest High School squeezed 62 pupils onto a queen-size bed.

HIRSCH’S Hillcrest and Hillcrest High School teamed up to celebrate World Sleep Day with an unusual, fun and community-driven idea on Friday, 11 March.

Together with Cloud Nine and Rest Assured, Hirsch’s regional stores came up with an activation to see how many pupils could fit onto a queen-size bed for at least 30 seconds – while raising money for a charitable project.

Hirsch’s Hillcrest’s activation took place at the school’s rugby fields at 1.15pm on Friday and classes came up with a strategy to squeeze (it was a tight fit) 62 pupils on the bed for 30 seconds.

Hirsch’s spokesperson said sleep is such an important part of our lives, particularly for young children. “When we visited underprivileged pre-schools in the areas in which we operate, we found that the children don’t have anywhere to sleep. Most children stay on until the evening when their parents pick them up and midday sleep is vital for them. Cloud 9 and Rest Assured have come on board with us to donate 10 sponge mattresses in each region for a pre-school of their choice,” said Taylor.

Hillcrest High School won the challenge and have chosen Siyabusisiwa and Sithembakuye Orphanages in KwaNyuswa to receive the mattress donation.
