Dancers compete for top spot

Dancers and spectators had a ball of a time.

SEVERAL dance studios from across the country gathered at the Kloof High School on Saturday, 13 February to participate in the Prix D’Elegance 2016 national Latin American, ballroom and freestyle dance competition.

The competition was directed by Alain Rijnvis of Dance2Dance in association with SADTA KZN and held in honour of Graham Smith.

Smith discovered a passion for dancing at the age of 18, which became a huge part of his life. He went through the amateur ranks and never stopped his dancing. His finale before retiring from his competitive dancing career was becoming the KZN Latin American Dance champion and in the same year runner-up in the SA 10 ballroom and Latin championships with his partner.

When he retired from competitive dancing, he opened his own dance studio, which produced many top dancers who are now on the organising committee of the relaunching of the 2016 Prix D’Elegance. He continues competitive teaching and then social dance classes before he died peacefully in 2014. His philosophy was ‘even if you have two left feet, if you can walk, you can dance’.

The organisers of the event thanked all its sponsors, especially Leopard Strass, Not Just Banting and TBA designs. They hope it make it an annual event once again.
