Westville prison denies hostage drama reports

The Westville employee was taken to hospital after he fainted in one of the Westville prison rooms.

THE Westville Correctional Services has denied reports of a hostage drama which was reported earlier today, Tuesday, 16 February.

KwaZulu-Natal correctional services spokesman, Thulani Mdluli, said one of the workers, who is a controller for the arsenal (room which stores highly important and dangerous security items) was doing his normal duties in the room.

“Whenever an employee enters that room, they need to lock themselves in as part of our security measures,” Mdluli said.

Mdluli said they started worrying when he did not return.

“There was no answer and we could not open the door as the keys were with him. Police had to be called to intervene and broke one of the windows. The controller was found lying down because of some sickness.

Mdluli added that the employee was taken to hospital and they are still waiting for the doctor’s report.

KZN police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane”, confirmed that the police were called out to intervene.
