Bellair SAPS welcomes acting commander

Mkhize's experience in the police force spans over a period of over two decades and her resumé speaks for itself.

THE newly-appointed station commander at Bellair SAPS says she is ready to serve and protect the community in the active fight against crime. Goodness Bongi Mkhize will take over the police station as of Tuesday, 1 March and succeeds Lt-Col Lionel Pillay, who held the position for 11 years. “My main focus at the station will be to reduce crime, ensure that a good relationship is maintained between our members and the community and to serve and protect,” she said.

Mkhize’s experience in the police force spans a period of over two decades and her resumé speaks for itself.

“I joined the force in 1992 when I started working as a constable in Mpumalanga township, Hammersdale. Two years later, I was promoted to sergeant and in 1998, I was promoted to warrant officer and worked at Camperdown SAPS as a community service commander,” she explained. In 2001, she was promoted to captain at Cramond SAPS and three years later, was deployed back to Mpumalanga as a lieutenant-colonel, commanding the visible policing unit.

“I then worked as a station commander for Umsunduzi SAPS in 2011. In 2013, I was in the Pinetown cluster office and have also been appointed as a visible policing commander in Montclair,” said Mkhize.

As she was progressively climbing the police ranks, the mother of three was also studying during the years, adding to her list of qualifications. “I have a diploma, BTech as well as a degree in policing,” she said.

She has an open door policy at work and invites CPFs, neighbourhood watches as well as the community to join forces with them in the fight against crime. But it is not all work and school for her; Mkhize says she enjoys spending time with her children as well as maintaining a healthy diet.
