UPDATE: Rands and litres go down the drain

A local company is battling to get the municipality to attend to a burst pipe on its premises.

THE manager of a manufacturing company on Piet Retief Road in the Queensmead industrial area said she is not happy with the way the municipality has dealt with the burst pipe on their premises.

“The municipality sent out a private contractor on Monday, 8 February after reports about this incident surfaced on the media. He didn’t fix the pipe but stopped the leak, we have no water as we speak,” said Nicky Jacobs. She said she has re-reported the issue to the water department and still awaits plumbers to replace the broken pipe.

“Having no water pushes back our production, and not only that, this is becoming a health hazard,” said Jacobs. For each day that the company is without water, they lose approximately R120 000 in down time.

The eThekwini Municipality said all reported cases are being attended to and urges residents to report any surcharging sewage issues immediately to the centre, especially recurrent issues that occur during or immediately after periods of heavy rain. Residents can use the number 083 707 3013 to SMS when reporting water leaks or e-mail eservices@durban.gov.za.
