Crowds enjoy froggy friends

The next frog celebration event is the exciting Frog Evening on Saturday, 27 February from 4pm at Tanglewood Farm.

IN anticipation of Leap Day for Frogs on 27 February, a family evening was organised by Lynne Matthews for the Hillcrest Conservancy recently.

Springside Nature Reserve is a gem of nature and bio-diversity, situated in Hillcrest. It has a natural wetland which sustains an important wildlife habitat where frogs can be heard in full cry in the evening.

The event took place at the nature reserve and more than 80 people attended, despite the overcast and damp weather.

Visitors enjoyed a picnic next to the wetland before Nick Evans, on behalf of the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), talked to the families present about the importance and value of frogs. Afterwards he led a group of very excited children wearing wellies and head torches for a frog hunt.

A band of loyal committee members assisted at the event. An amount of R1 700 was collected in donations and the proceeds will be shared by EWT and the Hillcrest Conservancy. These funds will be used for conservancy projects in Hillcrest.
