Hijacking suspect nabbed in shoot-out

The car was found in Tshelimnyama.

MARIANNHILL SAPS, with the help of a tracking company, arrested a 25-year-old man for attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm at Tshelimnyama after a shoot-out with four men on Saturday, 6 February.

Police also recovered the hijacked vehicle and an unlicensed firearm. The man will appear in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court soon.

A man was allegedly hijacked of his Hyundai i10 by three unknown gunmen in Amanzimtoti, who shot him in the leg and fled. A case of car hijacking and attempted murder was opened at Amanzimtoti police station for investigation.

The next day, police and the tracking company recovered the hijacked vehicle with four people in it in Tshelimnyama. The four men fired shots at the police and the shoot-out ensued. One of the men was injured and others fled on foot. He was then arrested and a firearm was recovered, and he will be charged for attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and will also be linked to the Amanzimtoti hijacking. The recovered firearm will be subjected to ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used in the Friday shooting or any other crime.

Provincial Commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal, Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded the partnership between police and the trackers, which led to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery. “We are searching for the remainder of the suspects and we advise them to hand themselves over to us because we are on their tails. I am delighted that none of the members were injured during the confrontation,” she said.
