One dead, two injured in N3 crash

Motorists are urged to drive with caution or use alternate routes while the area is being cleared.

ONE man is dead and two seriously injured following a truck crash on the N3 near the Mariannhill Toll Plaza earlier this morning.

According to Chris Botha, spokesman for Netcare 911, a truck carrying a load of scrap metal driving south-bound on the N3 went over the centre barrier, collided with two light motor vehicles and ended upside down in the north-bound lane.

Traffic was severely affected. Both south-bound lanes are open, however one lane is obstructed by emergency vehicles and only one lane is open on the north-bound.

Botha said traffic is still heavily backed up. Motorists are urged to drive with caution or find alternate routes.

According to Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson, paramedics arrived at the scene and found that a truck carrying scrap metal as well as a light motor vehicle had been involved in a collision. The truck was found lying upside down in the centre medium of the two highways with its contents of scrap metal spread across the highway.

“On assessment, paramedics found a body of a lifeless man lying a few metres away from the truck. Two other patients were found at the scene. One man was found lying trapped inside the truck and a woman was found lying inside the light motor vehicle. Both suffered moderate injuries. Rescue services used the jaws-of-life equipment to free the trapped man from the truck. Once freed, paramedics treated the injured and then transported them to nearby hospitals,” said Meiring.

Local authorities are investigating.
