WBHS against Kearsney in weekend clash

WBHS beat Kearsney College in cricket and waterpolo but lost to them in basketball.

HIGHWAY school sports giants, Kearsney College and Westville Boys’ High School, took to the battle field on the weekend.

After a good start to the season and accounting for Maritzburg College and St Charles in their opening fixtures, WBHS put together yet another great performance to beat visitors, Kearsney.

WBHS scored the winning runs in the 39th over for the loss of eight wickets, winning what turned out to be quite an entertaining and close affair by only two wickets. The final scores were Kearsney first XI: 148 (De Vlieg 34), Westville first XI: 149/8 (Koenig 6/32).

Having now won three on the trot, WBHS are hoping to continue their good form next weekend against Hilton College.

WBHS had another good day in the pool against Kearsney College on the weekend with WBHS winning nine out of the 10 games. The junior games were well-contested with WBHS winning the U14B and U14C games by one goal. Kearsney won the U14A game 13-1. In the U15 age group, the A team game was tight, with WBHS winning 6-5, and the 15B winning 8-1.

WBHS dominated the senior age groups with the closest game being the U16A, which WBHS won 6-2. In the first team game, WBHS led 2-0 after the first quarter. Kearsney started the second quarter well, closing the gap to a goal. WBHS finished the quarter off strong and at half-time led the game 4-2. In the third quarter, each team scored a goal with lots of missed opportunities from both sides. The fourth quarter saw WBHS dominating procedures and outscoring Kearsney 3-0. The game finished 8-3 in WBHS’s favour. WBHS goal scorers were Aden Parker 3, Richard Young 2, Gareth Lillywhite 2, Reuben Abbott 1.

Kearsney faced off against WBHS for the second fixture of the season. Kearsney came out strongly and led early on the scoreboard, but with big man Thomas Westermeyer scoring poorly inside the key, Kearsney’s game plan faulted. The game was described as a boxing match on a basketball court. At half-time, with the score at 17-16 to WBHS, both schools’ coaches stepped in and asked the referees to put a stop to the physicality to allow the boys to play basketball, which they did in the second half. WBHS went on a scoring run, leaving Kearsney seven points behind and a mountain to climb to get back into the game. They began to fight back when WBHS’s captain was fouled out – this seemed to open a door for Kearsney, who took their opportunities and clawed their way back.

The final whistle was blown with both teams on 50 points, setting up a period of overtime, which saw Kearsney able to outscore their opponents 10-6 and win the game.
