Kearsney enjoys cricketing cracker

Kearsney College beat Clifton College by 93 runs.

KEARSNEY College beat Clifton College by 93 runs in an emphatic T20 coastal final at Sahara Kingsmead Stadium on Sunday, 30 January.

After an excellent semi-final win over Glenwood during the week, they now face either Hilton or Maritzburg College in the final at the Maritzburg Oval this Friday (5 February).

After winning the toss, Kearsney captain, Brad Porteous, elected to bat first on a wicket that was a bit slow. Following a steady start, a few quick wickets left it to the lower-order batsmen to steer the team to 115/6 at the end of the allotted 20 overs.

Clifton had enjoyed some impressive recent victories against worthy opponents, so in order to restrict their batsmen, Kearsney’s bowlers knew they would have to produce something special. In what must go down as one of the most stunning displays of astute bowling, the Clifton side were decimated by a varied attack that produced the goods when it was needed.

Clifton were reeling at 6/5 at one stage and could only muster 22 runs in total.

Kearsney’s Matthew Lees picked up the best batsman award, while Patch McGrath received the best bowling and man of the match awards.

The final score was Kearsney 115/6 (Lees 35; Porteous 25) and Clifton 22 all out (Hudson 3/11; McGrath 3/4).
