Five arrested for Inchanga double murder

MEC Mchunu has commended the police for their hard work in arresting the culprits.

FIVE men aged between 25 and 43 were arrested for the murder of Bongani Hlatshwayo (38) and Phillip Dlamini (68), who were killed during a meeting in Inchanga.

A joint operation by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Task Team, Inchanga Detectives, Pinetown Tactical Response Team and Pietermaritzburg Tactical Response Team was conducted in the Inchanga area on Tuesday, 2 February to search for the culprits.

“A total of five men were arrested. Five firearms were recovered from the men and will be subjected to ballistic tests,” said KZN police spokesman, Brig Jay Naicker.

According to Naicker, Hlatshwayo and Dlamini were killed during a meeting at the Kwandokweni sports ground in Inchanga on Sunday, 24 January. “Four other people sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital,” he said.

Charges of murder, attempted murder and malicious damage to property were opened for further investigation at Inchanga SAPS.

The KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded the arrest of the suspects. “We will ensure that this case is thoroughly investigated and that the culprits appear in court so that they can be prosecuted for the killing of the two men,” she said.

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, also commended the police for the arrests, saying this would send a loud and clear message to criminals that police would leave no stone unturned to bring them to book.

“We believe that a strong and loud message should be sent to those who go around shooting and maiming people in KwaZulu-Natal. We thank the police for this work well done and urge any witnesses to this shooting to work with the police to ensure that justice is done,” said Mchunu.
